Cool, Right? 7 'Ologies' you May not Know Exist

1) Dendrology: The Study of Woody Plants.
Dendrology focuses on woody plants like trees and shrubs. The research of Dendrology spans wide, including the philosophy of how trees affect wildlife and their economic gain. There is also a branch of Dendrology which researches how to identify woody plants by their leaf shape. Cool, right?

2) Astrobiology (formerly Exobiology): The Study of Life Beyond Earth.
Ever wonder if aliens exist? Well, Exobiologists do too, except they do it for a living. Exobiology is dedicated to the nitty-gritty of life beyond Earth - not just the aliens. An Exobiologist's job is to increase knowledge of the evolution, origins, and distribution of life beyond Earth. Cool, right?

3) Deontology: The Study of Ethics.
Deontology focuses on defining right or wrong through a clear series or sequence of rules and regulations. Derived from the Greek word 'δέον' or 'deon', meaning duty. Basically a whole study and debate of what is right and what is wrong. Should we follow the rules? Nobody knows! Maybe deontologists do. Cool, right?

4) Numismatology: The Study of Currency.
Numismatology focuses on the study and collection of coins, tokens, paper money, and more. It also relates to the broader study of money and the exchange of goods for goods. This also relates to history, by researching what was used earlier instead of money. For example, Wikipedia states that in ancient times, Kyrgyz people used horses as primary currency and lambskins as change. Cool, right?

5) Axiology: The Study of Value.
Axiology is derived from the Greek word 'αξία' or 'axia' meaning value. It focuses on two types of values: aesthetics and ethics. Axiology is a philosophical study, researching how and why we as people focus on the value of things so much. There's also an amazing Kurzgesagt video on the human perception of value and beauty. Cool, right?

6) Gerontology: The Study of Ageing.
Gerontology is derived from the Greek word 'γέρων' or 'geron' which means old man. Gerontology includes all aspects of ageing, such as the cultural, psychological, and biological aspects. This study is different from geriatrics, because of its focus on each individual part of ageing, inclusive of the aspects mentioned earlier. Cool, right?

7) Oology: The Study of Bird's Eggs.
I definitely saved the best - and weirdest - for last. Oology is a branch of ornithology , focusing on the study of bird's eggs, nests, breeding behaviour, etc. Derived from the Greek word 'οίον' or 'oion' meaning egg. It also refers to the hobby of bird egg and nest collection. The hobby is banned in many places due to its disruption of wildlife and ecosystems. It was considered quite respectable to be involved in oology in Britain and the United States circa the early 1800s. Cool, right?
